Ryan Griggs
Ryan’s original goal was to become a professor of economics specializing in monetary and business cycle theory within a branch of economic thought called the Austrian School. To that end, he obtained a BA and MA in economics in 2015 and 2016, respectively, from the California State University, East Bay in Hayward, CA. He completed the first year of a PhD program in Agricultural and Applied Economics on a full academic scholarship through the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University during the 2016-17 academic year.
Ryan met Nelson Nash in May of 2016 at Nelson’s seminar in Rancho Cordova, CA, hosted by Kaye Lynn Peterson. Nelson knew of Ryan’s academic ambitions at the time through Nelson Nash Institute co-founder and Austrian economist Dr. Robert Murphy, who at the time was Visiting Assistant Research Professor at the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech. As the audio recording indicates, Nelson was very enthusiastic that “an Austrian” would take interest in his Infinite Banking Concept.
Three weeks after the seminar, Ryan acquired his first dividend-paying whole life insurance policy.
By the end of the 2017 academic year, Ryan had served as Research Assistant to FMI Director Dr. Ben Powell and passed doctoral comprehensive examinations in Microeconomics and Econometrics on the first sitting. Though successful on paper, Ryan concluded that the profession itself was not well-suited for the sort of economics that originally captured Ryan’s imagination.
In September 2017 Ryan completed the Nelson Nash Institute’s Authorized IBC Practitioner program, scoring the highest on the required examination to that point, and affecting a change to one of the exam questions. At the time, the program included a mentorship component. Ryan received a call from Nelson who informed Ryan that James Neathery would serve as Ryan’s mentor.
Ryan met James in person at a Nelson Nash speaking engagement hosted by James in Alvarado, TX in October 2017. In early 2019, Ryan and James recorded a first-of-its-kind, five-part book review of Nelson Nash’s book Becoming Your Own Banker: Unlocking the Infinite Banking Concept and posted it to YouTube. The experience went so well that the two decided to start a podcast together in March of 2019. The Banking with Life podcast is now the longest-running internet media program focused on the Infinite Banking Concept, featuring co-hosted episodes with Ryan and James, client interviews, and Q&A episodes. The show is recorded at the office of James C. Neathery & Associates, Inc. in Alvarado, TX.
Ryan’s been an invited speaker at the Nelson Nash Institute annual conference (called the “Think Tank”) in 2019, 2020, and 2023. In 2022, he released the seven-part, eight-hour lecture series Whole Life Insurance Mechanics from the Perspective of Nelson Nash’s Infinite Banking Concept, which presents the philosophy behind what “IBC-style” policy design means. In 2024, he published How to Buy Whole Life: A Framework for Becoming Your Own Banker for those inspired by Nelson’s work to implement the IBC in their own lives and who seek up-to-date guidance on how to competently, confidently approach the policy purchase process.
Ryan’s been an intern at the Ludwig von Mises Institute in 2013 where he passed the written and oral examinations (with honors) at Mises University. He is a Registered Financial Consultant through the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants, and expects to complete his PhD in Austrian Economics through the Universidad Francisco Marroquin in Guatemala City, Guatemala (working remotely) under the supervision of Dr. Robert Murphy.
Ryan resides in Rockwall, TX with his Great Dane Lucy.
